Jaw Surgery — Orthognathic Malocclusion Coeur D’Alene/Spokane

Published on July 9, 2019

Malocclusion of the teeth can cause a great deal of damage to the muscles that control the jaw. These muscles generate a tremendous force when clenching, grinding or chewing. A misaligned jaw can also affect the function and appearance if left untreated. For those dealing with this, orthognathic jaw surgery can be an effective solution that can dramatically improve these issues as well as one’s overall quality of life.

During jaw surgery, the upper jaw is moved and may be secured in position using tiny plates, wires, rubber bands and screws. Alteration to the mandible is achieved using bone grafts to align the lower jaw into the correct position. Pain medication will be prescribed as necessary, and you’ll be given post-treatment advice for your recovery. You may also be provided with a modified diet.

Dr. Daniel Cullum offers advanced techniques and model predictions using computers to demonstrate details of the jaw surgery as well as provide an idea of how you’ll look afterwards. He also will work closely with your dentist and orthodontist during the entire treatment process. For more information, contact our Sandpoint office.
